After Designing and selling jewelry for several years at different ends of the country..Mom and I decided we would expand and offer our work on the internet. So far...it's been fun and definately a learning experience!
I (Cassie) live in a suburb of Detroit, Michigan (NO, it's not a bad place to live!) It is a wonderful metropolitan area that has tons to offer! I moved up here from cornfield, Illinois 3 1/2 years ago and have loved every minute of it!
I have a Master's Degree in Social Work and work as a Nursing Home consultant. I travel all over the metropolitan area and absolutely love what I do, but have this "creative side" that wasn't being "fed".
Enter lampworking.
I found lampworking after trying to find and replace a venetian bead that cracked in a frigid storm in Chicago a couple years ago. Did some research, paid alot of money to replace the bead...and always kept the idea of lampworking in the back of my head. Did some research, found a wonderful teacher here in the metro Detroit area, took the class, and as they say...that's all she wrote!
I have been lampworking since March 2004 and am currently experimenting in color. I read somewhere to practice something until you perfect it...then move on to something else. I am working on my stringer control and am amazed that a day does not go by that I don't learn something to make my beads better. Some of my earlier beads were shoved in a drawer never to see the light of day again. If you are a lampworker...YOU know what beads I'm talking about!!
Mom works as a prison guard (see a pattern in our career choices?) and like me, NEEDED a solid stress reliever. She too has been making jewelry for years and when I first sent her my beads she asked "Did you paint these?". Well, hour and a half later....she too was hooked. She is currently making dichroics and is working on some custom shapes and designs that will be seen here and on eBay !
Mom is married to the most WONDERFUL man who supports her every move and really encourages her to "feed" that creativity!
My brother is also getting in on the act. Turns out the little bugger (ok, he's not little, he's 25) has quite the family creative streak. He's been doing pottery, is in a band, and took the fusing class with mom. Hmmm, might have to rethink the logo...add a "B" in there somewhere!
Picture of me and the kiddo...Kyle
My son, Kyle is 13 and yep, he's interested in lampworking! He's even made a bead. Still a bit scared of the flame, but when he has the interest...we're at the torch! But yanno, playing with fire in NOTHING compared to nuking bad guys on his X-Box! LOL
